Description
The Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum) is an attractive, deciduous, ornamental tree suited to larger outdoor growing spaces. Characterized by its distinctive three-lobed leaves, which emerge bright green in spring and transition to vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn, this tree is a favorite among landscape designers and gardeners alike.
The green leaves provide a lush canopy that offers dappled shade through the warmer months, then they shift color to yellow, orange, and red in the fall. Trident Maple can grow to a height between 20-40 feet with a rounded crown and a sturdy trunk that can reach up to 12 inches in diameter. Its bark is smooth and gray in youth, developing into a beautiful, flaking texture as it matures.
This tree is highly valued for its adaptability as it thrives in a variety of soil types and tolerates urban pollution, making it a popular choice for city parks and streetscapes. The Trident Maple also produces small yellowish-green flowers in flat-topped or umbrella-shaped clusters in April–May. These yield pairs of winged seed about 1" long that persist into autumn.

Sun Needs:
Full sun/part shade. For all Japanese Maples it’s important to think about light exposure: Too much light can damage delicate leaves. Too little light, and some of the more colorful varieties will take on an attractive greenish tone, but not the brilliant fall colors. For best color, most maples need a location with part day's sun or at least high light.
Soil/Water Needs:
Moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Prefers consistent moisture: Mulch will help retain moisture. Don't let soil dry out, nor become waterlogged.
