Description
Acer 'Shishigashira,' commonly known as the Lion's Head Maple, is a captivating deciduous tree celebrated for its uniquely textured foliage and striking architectural form. This cultivar showcases stunning, densely packed, and lobed leaves that resemble a lion's mane, hence its name. The leaves emerge a vibrant green in spring, transitioning to a rich golden-yellow in autumn.
Typically growing to a height of 6-10 feet with a similar spread, 'Shishigashira' is perfect for small gardens or as a focal point in larger landscapes. Its compact size and upright, bushy growth habit make it an excellent choice for container planting or even as a larger bonsai specimen. The tree thrives in well-drained, acidic soil and prefers partial shade to full sun, though it benefits from some protection against harsh afternoon sunlight.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Acer 'Shishigashira' is a relatively low-maintenance tree, requiring minimal pruning. Its unique foliage and elegant structure attract attention year-round, making it a solid choice for both formal and informal gardens. Care
Sun Needs:
Full sun/part shade. For all Japanese Maples it’s important to think about light exposure: Too much light can damage delicate leaves. Too little light, and some of the more colorful varieties will take on an attractive greenish tone, but not the brilliant fall colors. For best color, most maples need a location with part day's sun or at least high light.
Soil/Water Needs:
Moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. Prefers consistent moisture: Mulch will help retain moisture. Don't let soil dry out, nor become waterlogged.
